White Water
Progress onto moving water
White water kayaking is one of KCC’s core activity areas. Members build confidence through pool sessions, local river practice, safety learning, and suitable trips before taking on more demanding water.
River grades and progression
Grades help describe the water, but suitability depends on the paddler, group, river level, weather, equipment, and leader judgement.
G1 – 2
Beginner moving water
Easy flow, simple features, ferry glides, river signals, and safe swimming.

G2(3)
Progressive white water
Developing river reading, positioning, group awareness, and rescue habits.
G2/3 – 3
Intermediate white water
Reliable control, judgement, suitable kit, rescue awareness, and lead/sweep decisions.

G3(4) – 4
Advanced white water
Experienced paddlers only, strong team selection, rescue cover, and clear go/no-go decisions.
Safety
Qualified leaders, safety training and first aid
KCC has multiple Paddle UK qualified or recognised white water leaders involved in club activity.
Across the group we also have people trained in white water safety, advanced white water safety, and first aid.
Trips are planned around the right leader, group, water level, weather, and equipment for the day.

FAQs
White water questions
Do I need experience first?
Usually, yes. Pool confidence, rescue practice, and easier moving water experience help the club judge what is suitable.
Can beginners work towards white water?
Yes. New paddlers normally start through taster sessions, pool sessions, and suitable local practice before progressing.
Are trips guaranteed to run?
No. White water activity depends on conditions, suitable groups, equipment, access, and available organisers or leaders.
Where should I start?
If you are new to KCC, start with the Start Paddling page or ask at a pool session about the right next step.
