Understand the taster session

Read what normally happens, who tasters are for, what to bring, and how the pool session works before you book.

Ready to try it?

Use the booking form when you are ready to request a taster. The club can then help with practical details before you attend.

How the beginner journey works

The exact route depends on age, confidence, experience, equipment, and volunteer availability, but most new paddlers follow a simple pathway.

1. Read the taster information

Check what happens at a taster session, what to wear, and what the club can provide.

2. Book your first session

Use the booking form so the club has the details needed before you arrive.

3. Try paddling at the pool

Meet volunteers, get settled, and try the basics in a more controlled environment.

Practical

What to bring

Bring swimwear or light sports clothing suitable for getting wet, a towel, and warm dry clothes for afterwards.

Bring any personal medication you need. If you have a medical, access, confidence, or welfare need that may affect taking part, tell the club through the booking route so volunteers can plan appropriately.

Session-specific kit, timing, cost, and parent or carer requirements should be checked on the taster session page or confirmed when you book.

After your taster

If you want to continue, the next step is usually regular pool sessions, membership, and suitable club activity.

Pool sessions

Build confidence, boat handling, rescue practice, and rolling in a regular club setting.

Membership

Membership is the route into regular club activity, communication, and the wider KCC community.

Club activity

Progress towards local river sessions, flat water, sea kayaking, white water, trips, and community events when suitable.
